Episode 91: Part 1/4 Cognitive Strategies for College Students – Planning

Today’s Topic: Part 1 of 4 part series on Executive Functioning for College Students
But first… I’m changing up my goal! Discussion about why and how it fits in with my long-term goals (task-oriented vs. process-oriented) as well as why it serves as a good segue into today’s topic.

Cognition – A set of mental processes that underlies learning, including attention, memory, comprehending language, verbal and visual recognition, computation, reasoning, and problem solving.

Executive Functions – An umbrella term for the cognitive processes that help thought and action or the “cognitive control system.”

Student Strategies
  • Calendaring like you depend on it
  • Weekly review sessions
  • To-Do List
  • Task Management (vs. Time Management)
  • Consistent time working (knowing your weekly workflow)
  • Transfer syllabi to calendar
Instructor Strategies
  • Encourage/model habits & routines
  • Large projects have multiple due dates
  • Consistent return of grades
  • Announce housekeeping info at the end of class
